Welcome to Know Your Rights! —an educational package designed to teach young adults a little bit about law they can use.  Produced and hosted by Professor Richard Alderman of the The People's Lawyer, the materials are presented as a joint project of the The People's Lawyer, the State Bar Law Focused Education Committee and the Consumer Credit Counseling Service.  Funding for the project was provided in part by a grant provided by the Texas Bar Foundation.

Know Your Rights! is a self-contained teaching package.  It contains videotapes, lesson plans, quizzes and supporting material, all focused on everyday law.  The objective of the material is simple, to inform young adults about their legal rights and show them how to avoid problems and resolve disputes.

The materials contain two tapes.  Tape One contains two programs.  The first deals with credit and checks and explains how to use and manage money.  The second deals with the legal and practical considerations of buying a car or renting an apartment.  Both programs incorporate interviews with young adults who add their experiences to the discussions.  The second tape contains 43 brief legal discussions dealing with everything from family law to wills and consumer law.  Relevant statutes supplement the short stories and each explains one significant aspect of the law.

Know Your Rights! is available free of charge to any public high school teacher.  Other individuals or groups may obtain a copy for a small fee.  To find out more about the materials, or to order a copy, call 713-743-3766.
