Once again, it is time for the "People's Law School," the oldest and most successful law program for the layperson in the country! This is your chance to learn more about your legal rights, and have fun at the same time. On Saturday, April 7th, the Center for Consumer Law at the University of Houston Law Center, with the sponsorship of the Houston Bar Association, will host more than forty volunteer lawyers, judges, and law professors, teaching courses in fourteen different areas of law. Best of all, it is absolutely free! Although there is no charge for the "People's Law School," you must pre-register to attend. Registration is limited to the first 1000 people. The People’s Lawyer’s Tip of the Day

Federal law allows you to withhold payment from your credit card company if the goods you purchase never arrive. But you must act quickly. Under the law, you must dispute your bill within 60 days of when it is sent. Wait too long and you lose you rights!  


Tempting the Tax Auditor

The number of audits in 2005 was the highest since 1998, just before the agency's operational structure was realigned. The trend is continuing. During fiscal year 2006 (from Oct. 1, 2005, through Sept. 30, 2006) IRS figures show that the agency completed more than 1.28 million audits of individuals, up slightly from the 1.25 million scrutinized the year before.  Click here for more.
