A new bill would give federal workers financial relief and protection during the shutdown

The U.S. government’s shutdown has created havoc with travel and even raised concerns about IRS refund checks going out. One of the biggest concerns was the livelihood of 800,000 U.S. federal workers caught in the middle. Luckily, those workers found a pair of angels on Wednesday. Representative Derek Kilmer (D-Washington) and Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) spearheaded a group of 22 Democratic lawmakers setting in motion the Federal Employee Civil Relief Act (S.72 and HR.67). Click here for more.

Court holds state contract statute of limitations applies to TILA rescission claims. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit held that Washington’s six-year statute of limitations governing contracts instead of the Truth in Lending Act’s one-year statute of limitations applies to claims to enforce rescission under TILA, after a notice of right to cancel was timely submitted. The court also held that the trial court should have given the borrowers leave to amend the complaint because the borrower’s rescission claim under TILA was not time barred, and amending the complaint would not be futile.
