Citibank to compensate some student loan borrowers

A $3.75 million settlement between Citibank and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will spell a refund for college students that serviced their loans through the bank. The agency said Citibank’s handling of the loans resulted in added expense for borrowers. It said the bank misled borrowers about a valuable tax deduction on the interest paid on certain loans, resulting in higher tax payments. Additionally, the CFPB says the bank of incorrectly charged late fees, added interest to loans that were eligible for deferred payments, misled consumers regarding monthly bill payments and failed to disclose required information after denying borrowers’ requests to release loan cosigners. Click here for more.

Proposed class action against Home Depot dismissed under Spokeo. The claim eluded a proposed class action accusing the retailer of wrongfully obtaining job applicants’ personal information through improper background checks, as a California federal judge found the applicants failed to demonstrate actual harm as required under the U.S. Supreme Court's Spokeo decision. Saltzberg v.
