Increase in Insulin Cost is Concerning

According to a new study, the cost of the hormone insulin, one of the most important treatments for diabetes, rose nearly 200 percent between 2002 and 2013. While other diabetes medications also increased in price, total spending on insulin in 2013 was greater than the combined spending on all those other drugs. Gabbay, chief medical officer of the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston says, "Here is the treatment that almost one-third of people with diabetes are on and its increased in price to this degree, that’s quite concerning."  Click here for more.

Court reduces punitive damages to 1:1 ratio. A federal appeals court has whittled a $25.5 million punitive damages award to $1.95 million in a carbon monoxide poisoning lawsuit out of Wyoming. Reversing much of the lower court’s decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit found that punitive damages in the case were “excessive and arbitrary” in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment’s due process clause.
