Marriott Won't Block Wi-Fi Afterall

When Marriott asked the FCC for permission to block access to Wi-Fi devices in its conference spaces, consumer backlash was swift and fierce.



In response to the backlash, Marriott representatives say the company is withdrawing its request and will not attempt to block personal Wi-Fi hotspots.



Last year, Marriott paid $600,000 to resolve an FCC investigation. According to the FCC press release, employees at Marriott's Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville used containment tactics to prevent guests from accessing their own personal Wi-Fi hotspots.

Southwest Fined $1.6 Million for Tarmac Delays

Although it's January 2015, Southwest Airlines is still paying the price for problems it faced in January 2014. On January 2 and 3 of last year, sixteen Southwest Airlines planes experienced delays exceeding three hours. Federal law requires airlines to give passengers an opportunity to get off the plane if delays exceed three hours.



The Department of Transportation has issued Southwest Airlines a record $1.6 million fine for the violations.

T-Mobile Offers New Prepaid Mobile Plans

On Thursday, T-Mobile announced new set of prepaid mobile phone plans. For $40, T-Mobile customers can get unlimited talk, text, and data. The first gigabyte of data will be 4G LTE. After the first gigabyte, customer data speeds will drop to 2G (yes, 2G, not 3G). For an additional $10 a month, customers can get three gigabytes of 4G LTE before experiencing slower speeds.



The new T-Mobile plans actually compete with another T-Mobile backed provider, MetroPCS.

Class action against Facebook not dismissed.

A federal district court in California rejected a motion to dismiss a class action against Facebook for intercepting the content of users' electronic messages in order to determine if users "like" a webpage (for purposes of Facebook's "like" counter) and in order to help Facebook send users targeted advertising.
