The People’s Lawyer’s Tip of the Day

Don't think stopping payment on a check protects you from having to pay when a problem arises. If the check is transferred to another person, you probably will have to pay, even if you have a legitimate reason to not pay the person to whom you gave the check.

Clicking LIKE Can Help Scammers

If you use Facebook, you've certainly seen someone asking for you to "LIKE" or "SHARE" a post. It could be someone pulling at your heart strings with a touching picture, or a sappy story made for a movie.

Here's the point. Clicking "LIKE"
doesn't cure cancer. It won't help anyone. Ever. In fact, it could do the opposite. Most people may think, "what harm could it do?" Every time a scammer gets a "LIKE," more people see the post. In turn, as "LIKES" begin to grow, Facebook adds more value to the page. With greater distribution through both Facebook and its users, the sappy story or cute picture could be used as a means to spread malware to consumer computers, or as a way to steal sensitive personal information.

If you see a post on Facebook begging for a "LIKE," ignore it. By holding back, you protect yourself and your friends from a new breed of online crooks.

IRS Resources for Free Tax Filings

Tax season is here! If you made less than $58,000 in 2013, you may qualify for access to variety of popular tax preparation services. Many taxpayers don't even know that they may qualify for free access, and will instead opt to pay up to $100 for step-by-step tax preparation.

Don't throw away your money!

Before you buy software or pay someone else to do your taxes, see if "Free File" is an option for you.

If you prefer to avoid tax preparation software, you may even qualify to have a volunteer prepare your tax filing.

For the Lawyers

Right of rescission expires upon the sale of property.

Notice of rescission is not sufficient to exercise the right of rescission. The Eight Circuit held that a consumer did not preserve his right of rescission simply by giving notice prior to the foreclosure sale of his property.
