Preventing Holiday Fraud & Identity Theft
Although identify theft and Internet fraud are a big deal year-round, statistics show consumers are particularly susceptible scams during the holidays. The reasoning follows that as consumers become distracted during the holidays, they become more vulnerable.
If you choose to shop online during the holidays, be particularly aware of the sites you use. If you see a great deal on a site you've never visited, research the business before you click "buy." If you're required to make an account, do not use the same password you use on other trusted sites. Be sure to note, fancy graphics are not indicative of true value and upstanding service.
Never give out your mother's maiden name, birthday, or social security number when you shop online. It shouldn't be necessary and could leave you at the mercy of ID thieves.
