Latest Information on Government Shutdown

Government leaders met at the White House on Wednesday to work on a deal to reopen government operations. According to reports out of Washington, the sides left no closer to deal.

The government shut down on October 1 amid a budget crisis, leaving many government agencies and operations closed and federal employees without pay.

Democratic leaders want to create stopgap legislation to get the government functioning again by increasing the debt limit with no conditions attached. Republican leaders are refusing any increase to the debt limit unless democratic leadership agrees to take steps to strip down the Affordable Care Act.

If there is no deal by the middle of the month, the United States government will default on its obligations. Such inaction could trigger a major economic event.

How long will it be before federal employees are back on the payroll? Will congressional leaders reach a deal before default?

The live-in housekeeper signed a one-page agreement to arbitrate that was presented to her by her employer, a car dealership owner, sometime after she started working, and it contained no other agreement about her pay, hours, or other terms of employment.

A unanimous Virginia Supreme Court sent the dispute to arbitration.
