Experts Say Government Shutdown Likely

If lawmakers don't strike a deal in the coming hours, the government will be forced to shut down beginning October 1. To date, republicans and democrats have failed to reach a deal to increase the debt limit to pay America's bills. With both sides far apart on a deal, political experts are telling the public to prepare for the worst.

How will a government shutdown impact the country? National parks, museums, and zoos will be closed. Passport offices located inside federal buildings will be closed. Non-critical federal employees will be placed on mandatory furlough. Military personnel will continue to work, but won't be paid until the government resumes operations. Gun permits and loans will have to wait.

What can you expect as the first government shutdown in 17 years approaches?

Getting a Refund When Company Says No

What does it take to get a refund when a company initially denies the request?

Many major companies provide employees with scripts to read when a consumer requests a refund. No matter the question or comment, these scripts provide employees with an immediate response to unhappy consumers. Unless, of course, a consumer asks "are you reading from a script?"

If a company denies your request for a refund, don't give up right away. There are a few basic tricks to getting to "yes" when asking for your money back. First, ask questions surely to be outside the scope of the script. If representatives don't have an answer readily available, they'll have to listen, think, and respond accordingly. Second, ask for a direct supervisor. It helps to speak with someone with the authority to actually effectuate change. Finally, be pleasant. Say "please" and "thank you" often. Watch the tone of your voice. Many agents are accustomed to consumers abusing them verbally. Don't be that consumer.
