Consumers Can Prevent Robocalls

According to a federal appellate court in Pennsylvania, consumers have the right to prevent calls from automated dialing services by revoking consent.

The ruling stems from a case in which a woman was received forty calls in three weeks from Dell attempting to collect a delinquent debt. Despite sending a letter asking it to stop, Dell continued to call. The case is different from others because it involves whether a consumer may revoke consent after previously providing express consent.

The court relied on the Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991, stating:

"We find that the TCPA provides consumers with the right to revoke their prior express consent to be contacted on cellular phones by autodialing systems."

New Health Care Law Subsidies Available

With health insurance exchanges kicking in starting at the beginning of 2013, low to mid income Americans may be able to get a break on their premiums. By some estimates, nearly 50% of Americans could qualify for subsidies for an average savings of about $5,500. A single person making less than $45,960 or a family of four pulling in less than $94,200 should be eligible for some potentially significant savings. Those who make more will be responsible for the entirety of the cost.
