The People’s Lawyer’s Tip of the Day

If you can't get a good interest rate, consider increasing the amount of your monthly payment. For a $15,000 loan at 21 percent interest, payable at $405.80 for 60 months, the interest charge you pay over the term of the loan is $9,348.02. Your total repayment amount is $24,348.02. By adding just $50 a month, you shorten your payoff term to 50 months and save $1,814.22 in interest.

How Insomnia Can Harm Your Heart

Insomnia does a lot more than keep you up at night. According to a study published in the European Heart Journal, there is evidence of a substantial link between insomnia and heart failure. The study, which spanned eleven years and focused on 50,000 men and women, looked at trouble falling asleep, trouble staying asleep, and waking up still feeling fatigued. Ultimately, persons struggling with insomnia can up stress hormones that increase inflammation levels and release catecholamines, which is tied to heart disease.

Storage Units: To Insurance or Not

Do you have a storage unit? Should you buy insurance to cover the unit?

Before you do, check with your homeowners or renters insurance to see if it covers possessions kept outside the home. In many instances, homeowners or renters insurance will protect possessions outside the home for up to 10 percent of your total coverage. However, many contracts are different, so read carefully to see if you're covered.

If you're not covered, or simply would like better coverage, insuring a storage unit can be pretty inexpensive. For example, $1,000 of coverage would cost about $5 a month.

As with any purchase, research the insurance company carefully! Don't commit to a contract that might not actually help you when you need it most!
