The People’s Lawyer’s Tip of the Day

When shopping be sure to keep an eye on the register. Don't assume that just because a product is scanned, the amount is correct. Scanners are not always properly programmed to include sales and special deals, and often make errors.

GOP Initiates Fight Over Debt Ceiling

In the history of the American President, a request to increase the debt limit was nothing more than a matter of procedure. Shortly after republicans took control of the House of Representatives, a contentious relationship between the President and House republicans developed quickly, heightening tensions on just about every major negotiation.

In 2011, for the first time in history, House republicans refused to increase the debt limit. Shortly thereafter, republicans and democrats agreed to a debt limit increase, but developed the "fiscal cliff" in the process.

With the "fiscal cliff" debate in the past, House republicans are again threatening to block a new increase to the debt ceiling. In fact, the republican party is contemplating a government shutdown. Should the government fail to increase the debt limit, many economists predict an American credit rating disaster and a new recession.

Will republicans and democrats strike a deal in time to avoid a government shutdown and default?

Toyota Passes GM in Global Sales

Riding high on its best year since 2007, Toyota has once again taken control of the global auto sales race. With 9.7 million vehicles sold, Toyota easily bested General Motors (9.29 million vehicles sold) and Volkswagen (9.09 million vehicles) for the year's top spot.

The change marks an impressive turnaround for Toyota. After a 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan slowed Toyota production and sales, General Motors went in to 2012 as the sales leader first time since 2008.

Is Toyota poised for an extended reign on top? Or, can General Motors retake the lead as the company continues to streamline operations?
