Always use a credit card when shopping online or by mail. Federal law allows you to refuse to pay the credit card bill if the goods are never delivered.

GM Recalls More Than 69,000 Vehicles

General Motors has issued a recall for over 69,000 vehicles, citing roll away concerns. According to the recall, some vehicles may have fractured park lock cables in addition to malformed steering column lock components. Under certain circumstances, the vehicle can roll away even after being placed into "park."

General Motors estimates that only about 1,000 of the nearly 70,000 vehicles are expected to have the defect.

FDA Proposes New Food Safety Rules

The Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on farmers and food companies, proposing a new set of safety regulations to prevent food contamination. According to the FDA, one in six Americans will get sick from a foodborne illness like E. coli or salmonella. In recent years, relaxed protocols at plants around the nation resulted in several high profile cases of contamination that left hundreds of Americans sick.

The new rules will require farmers and food companies to be more vigilant about food safety. For example, farmers will be required regularly clean irrigation water, wash their hands, and keep animals out of the fields.

Each year, 3,000 people die from foodborne illness. How will the new rules protect you and your family? Click here for more.

For the Lawyers

Legal malpractice plaintiff cannot recover “lost” punitive damages. The Kentucky Supreme Court held that a legal malpractice plaintiff could not recover lost punitive damages when suing an attorney who allegedly mishandled her personal injury case. The court held that lost punitive damages are not recoverable in a legal malpractice suit, explaining that “the nexus between the attorney accused of malpractice and the actual wrongdoer is far too attenuated. As such, a client’s general right to be made whole should yield in light of the nature and purpose of punitive damages.” Click here for more.
