The People’s Lawyer’s Tip of the DayFederal law prohibits a debt collector from calling you at work, but only after he knows your employer prohibits such calls. If a debt collector calls you at work, let him know that your employer does not allow such calls and that you assume he will never call again. If the debt collector calls back, he has violated federal law and you could be entitled to a penalty of up to $1,000. BP to Pay $4.5 Billion to GovernmentBP and the United States government have come to a settlement over the devastating 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The record $4.5 billion fine includes $1.3 billion in criminal fines, $2.4 billion for the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, $350 million for the National Academy of Sciences, and $500 million for the Securities and Exchange Commission. Last year, BP recorded a record $25.8 billion in profits. USPS Reports Record LossThe United States Postal Service is losing money. Just last year, the USPS posted a $5.1 billion loss.
