The People’s Lawyer’s Tip of the Day

It is illegal in Texas to charge more to someone who pays with a credit card. It is legal, however, to give a discount for cash. This discount is for the savings to the merchant who does not have to pay the fee that the credit card company charges (note: this law does not apply to governmental entities).

Why Americans Can't Vote Online

Why can't you vote for the Presidential election online? After-all, many other countries already use the Internet to vote in elections with great effectiveness. The benefits for America could be huge. Younger, elderly, and disabled Americans would have greater access to the electoral process. Yet, it remains unlikely that a change could be made. According to election scholars, online elections are considered "culturally distasteful" and run a greater risk of hacker attacks.

Amazon Prime Introduces Monthly Rate

Have you ever considered purchasing Amazon Prime? The popular Amazon service has traditionally been available at a rate of $79 per year (although students get a significant discount). Customers complained that $79 was simply too much to pay at one time. Amazon listened.

Ahead of this year's holiday season, consumers can join Amazon Prime for a monthly rate of $7.99. Obviously, if the consumer keeps the service for a year, he will have paid about $17 more than traditional annual subscribers.

Amazon Prime offers free streaming videos (like Netflix) and free two-day shipping. If you're planning to do your holiday shopping online, you may be able to save money and time by using Amazon Prime.
