Report Finds Doctors Billing Medicare More

According to the report "Cracking the Codes," doctors have added over $11 billion to the cost of elderly patient care over the past decade by ignoring cheaper billing codes and using the more expensive alternatives. The practice, known as "upcoding," involves charging for more expensive and costly services than the value of the services rendered.



Medicare has been at the forefront of the presidential campaign. Although the program will likely remain, it will need to undergo some significant changes to be sustainable. The authors of the report suggest taking a close look at hospital and doctor medicare billing practices. What do you think?
