Federal Reserve Acts to Boost Economy

With unemployment still high, the Federal Reserve decided it was time to take action. In addition to maintaining short-term interest rates near 0%, the Federal Reserve will also launch a bond-buying stimulus program. As part of the controversial program, the Fed will pick up $40 billion in mortgage-backed securities per month. Unlike previous programs, the Fed will have the flexibility to extend or retract the program based on the results it provides. The Fed expects to continue the program until
unemployment improves.



According to numerous reports, the Fed took the unusual steps to spur economic growth only after it became clear that Congress was not going to step in.



Within moments of the announcement, stock prices hit a five year high.
