Evaluating Value: Warehouse Clubs

A Sam's Club membership costs $40 a year. A Costco membership runs $55 a year. For many consumers, a $55 membership fee is a small price to pay for the chance to save a lot of money on shopping expenses. Many consumers immediately think, "how can I earn back what I just paid in membership fees through store savings?" According to a professor out of Cornell, this is a "spending... justification mentality" that simply leads consumers to spend money on things that they wouldn't otherwise purchase. In other instances, the savings simply may not be there. Whether a consumer is buying drinks, meat, medication, or clothing, he might be able to find the same or better price in a traditional retail store. For these reasons, experts believe club stores can be much more expensive than the fee one pays to get in the door. Find out why! Click here for more.
