AG Wins $195 Million Against TaxMasters

You've probably seen the TaxMasters commercials on TV. If you listen to Patrick Cox, TaxMasters will solve your tax problems. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, thousands of defrauded consumers, and a Texas jury saw things differently. The jury found that the defendants "committed over 110,000 violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act and ordered the defendants to pay a total of over $195 million." 1.5 Million Credit Card Numbers at Risk

Your credit card number might be at risk. A credit card processing company (Global Payments) confirmed a massive data breach after discovering an intrusion in early March. Stubhub cannot be sued for ticket scalping. The North Carolina Court of Appeals has ruled that federal law immunizes StubHub from a state lawsuit alleging that the online ticket company engaged in unfair or deceptive trade practices by scalping tickets. Relying on the immunity provided by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (47 U.S.C. § 230), the court noted, “there have been approximately 300 reported decisions addressing immunity claims advanced under 47 U.S.C. § 230 in the lower federal and state courts. All but a handful of these decisions find that the website is entitled to immunity from liability.” Click here for more.
