Employer Request for Facebook Passwords

Are employers violating federal law when they ask prospective employees for their Facebook passwords? Senators Charles Schumer and Richard Blumenthal are asking the Justice Department and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to investigate.




Recently, numerous employers have asked applicants to provide account passwords so they can review the applicants photos, wall posts, comments, and anything that might be protected by privacy settings.




According to Facebook, password sharing is a violation of its terms of service. Facebook has asked users to protect their passwords. Why? According to Facebook, when a user allows someone else to use his account, it might "jeopardize the security of your account or violate the privacy of your friends."

FTC Wants Data Security Law

Sensitive digital data has become a hot topic over the past few months. Companies like Google have modified privacy agreements to grant greater leniency in the sharing of consumers' digital data. Furthermore, many mobile applications have been sharing consumer contacts, photos, and GPS locations without appropriate consent.
