Senate Republicans Block New CFPB LeaderOn Thursday, Senate Republicans voted to block the confirmation of Richard Cordray to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. President Obama picked Cordray, a former Ohio Attorney General, to lead the new Consumer Financial Protection Agency earlier this year. According to reports, Senate Republicans blocked the candidate because they don't agree with the agency in principle, not because of his credentials, despite the fact that the agency already exists in law. Postal Service Plans for Deep CutsAfter suffering billions of dollars in losses, the United States Postal Service will be slimming down operations this spring. The cuts are expected to significantly slow the delivery of mail, especially between close cities. USPS plans to close 252 of its 487 mail processing centers. How will the changes affect services like Netflix, mail-order prescriptions, and bill payments? Yahoo Wins $610 million in Lottery CaseBetween May 2006 and December 2009, nearly 12 million fake notices of lottery winnings were sent through the Yahoo email system. Yahoo officials were able to identify the scammers behind the false emails and filed suit against them in 2008. After none of the defendants responded to the complaint, a federal judge awarded Yahoo $610 million under the U.S. Can-Spam Act. Despite the massive award, Yahoo will likely never be able to collect. The Nevada Supreme Court held that when a pharmacist has knowledge of a customer-specific risk with respect to a prescribed medication, he or she has a duty to exercise reasonable care in warning the customer or notifying the prescribing doctor of this risk.
